A Victorian boy costume for a school day can be as simple as a collared shirt, a waistcoat, dark trousers or knickerbockers, and a flat cap. For girls, a dark dress, a pinafore apron, and a mop cap look the part. Our Kids Victorian Waistcoat and Cap Costume covers the two hardest pieces, so the shirt and trousers can come from home. Tudor, WW2 evacuee, and Anglo-Saxon days follow the same pattern: choose a complete pack, or buy only the pieces that are hard to improvise.

What should a child wear for a Victorian day at school?
Dress your child as an ordinary Victorian school pupil: a shirt and trousers for a boy, a dress with a pinafore for a girl. An Islington teaching resource describes girls wearing dresses and pinafores to school and boys wearing trousers and a shirt, sometimes with a waistcoat (Object Lessons). A Hampshire teachers' pack adds that pinafores protected girls' dresses, and that the class photos in it show lace collars on most girls and Eton collars on most boys (Hampshire History Curriculum Centre).
There was no single Victorian school uniform: uniforms varied from school to school, and many children wore their ordinary clothes, sometimes with a pinafore over the top (Object Lessons). Children from poorer families wore patched, mended clothes that were often bought second-hand and passed down, and even children from fairly comfortable homes owned very few outfits (V&A, "Victorian Children" teachers' resource). So plain or smart, either look suits a Victorian day.
Between 22 April and 11 October 2026, a Victorian costume was in roughly a third of the orders on morphsuits.co.uk that included a kids' history costume (our own GA4 order data).
Do we need to buy a costume for history day?
Not always, and we would rather say so. The Victorian and evacuee day letters we have read tell parents a bought costume is optional. A Year 6 Victorian day letter from a Northamptonshire school suggests trousers, long socks, a shirt, and a cap for boys and a long dark dress or skirt with an apron or shawl for girls, and says it does not need to be a purchased costume (Alts Northants letter). A Wiltshire infant school's evacuee day letter says it does not expect anyone to buy anything, and that each child is given an identity label on arrival (Wootton Bassett Infants letter). Year 4 and Year 5 Victorian day letters from primaries in Herefordshire and Ealing say the same (Kingstone and Thruxton, Woodlands).
Check your own school's letter first. If the shirt, dark trousers, and shoes are already in the wardrobe, the pieces worth buying are the ones that are hard to improvise: the waistcoat, the flat cap, the mop cap, and the pinafore. Our Kids Victorian Waistcoat and Cap Costume covers the first two. The same pieces also work for a book day, which our guide to World Book Day costumes for kids covers.

Kids Victorian Waistcoat and Cap Costume, £12.99
Two pieces only: a black waistcoat and a matching flat cap, in four age bands (4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 12-14 years). The white shirt, dark trousers, and school shoes in the photo come from your wardrobe, not the box.
Which Victorian costume suits which role?
Choose the role before the costume: a school pupil, a servant, or a wealthy gentleman. Our kids historical costumes range covers all three, and the picks below take them in turn, with a second option folded into the boys' and girls' entries.
Boys Victorian Costume, £23.99
Shirt, knickerbockers, waistcoat, and cap: the Boys Victorian Costume puts the school-pupil look from the Islington resource above into one pack, for ages 7 to 14 (M to XL). Black school shoes from home finish it. If your child would rather wear colour, the Boys Victorian Schoolboy Costume swaps in a green waistcoat, grey shirt, black trousers, and brown flat cap.

Girls Victorian Schoolgirl Costume, £23.99
For the girls' school-pupil look, the Girls Victorian Schoolgirl Costume layers a blue long-sleeve shirt under a white dress with blue printed flowers, as the listing's wearing tip says, and adds a Victorian mop cap. Sizes M to XL cover 7 to 14 years; tights and flat shoes come from home. The servant role is the Girls Victorian Costume: a black dress with an attached white pinafore and a mop cap.
Boys Regency Victorian Gentleman Costume, £20.99
For the wealthy gentleman, the Boys Regency Victorian Gentleman Costume has a green tailcoat jacket, grey elasticated trousers, a white neck tie, and a black top hat, in M to XL for ages 7 to 14. There is no shirt in the pack, so a white one from home goes under the tailcoat, and the listing says to size up if your child is between two.

What should a child wear for a Tudor day?
Go as a working Tudor: a shirt, a waistcoat, an apron, and a hat. Historic UK's guide to Tudor dress describes working men in a shirt, tunic, and trousers, and working women in a short practical dress, a simple headdress, and an apron (Historic UK). That guide covers adults, and the two packs below follow the same working look for children.

Girls Tudor Kitchen Costume, £17.99
Apron, waistcoat, and hat all come in the Girls Tudor Kitchen Costume: a brown skirt with the white apron attached, a brown waistcoat, a white top, and a matching hat, for ages 7 to 14 in M to XL. The basket of bread is a photo prop, so leave it off the list; flat shoes from home finish the outfit.
Boys Deluxe Tudor Costume, £15.99
The Boys Deluxe Tudor Costume has five pieces: brown trousers with a white apron, a white shirt, a brown waistcoat, a black belt, and a matching hat. Its four sizes start at 4-6 years and run to 12-14, so it reaches the younger end of primary school. Between sizes, the listing says go up.

If the class is doing the Tudor court rather than the kitchen, the Girls Green Tudor Dress Costume is a green Tudor dress and a green headband with an attached veil, in four sizes from 4-6 to 12-14 years, at £35.99.
What should a child wear for an evacuee day?
An evacuee outfit is made by what the child carries as much as what they wear. Evacuation began on 1 September 1939, and about 1.47 million people were moved out of Britain's cities under the government scheme in the first three days (Titmuss, UK civil history series). Children carried a gas mask and wore a paper identification tag, with a bag or suitcase of essentials (World History Encyclopedia). A cardboard box covered in brown paper stands in for the gas mask case, and some schools hand out the identity label on the day, as the Wiltshire school above does.
About 800,000 of the evacuees in that first phase were schoolchildren travelling without their parents (Titmuss, as above), so we treat this one as a history lesson first and a dressing-up day second.

Girls WW2 Evacuee Dress and Coat Costume, £21.99
A floral green dress, a long black coat, and a beret make up the Girls WW2 Evacuee Dress and Coat Costume, for ages 7 to 14 (M to XL). It is designed to go over light underlayers, so size up if your child is between two. The luggage label in the photo does not come with it: write your child's name on one from home, or use the school's.
What about an Anglo-Saxon day?
Anglo-Saxons are one of the statutory Key Stage 2 history topics in England's national curriculum. The programme of study lists Britain's settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots, and the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England. The Tudors, the Victorians, and WW2 are not named as statutory topics, so schools choose which periods to use for the required theme beyond 1066 and for local history (Department for Education).
The Ashmolean Museum says we cannot be sure exactly what Anglo-Saxon children wore, and that it appears they dressed like the adults: boys in trousers and a tunic with a belt, and girls probably in a long tunic dress, some with an over-dress pinned at the shoulders with brooches (Ashmolean).

Boys Anglo Saxon Costume, £22.99
Tunic, trousers, and belt, as the Ashmolean describes the boys: the Boys Anglo Saxon Costume has a grey tunic, brown trousers, and a belt, for ages 7 to 14 (M to XL). The round shield in the photo is not part of the pack. The girls' version, the Girls Anglo Saxon Costume at £20.99, is a grey v-neck dress with brown edging; it is cut as a dress, so size up between sizes.
If the next topic is the Romans, our Roman and toga fancy dress guide splits those packs the same way.
What is in each pack, and what do you add from the wardrobe?
Shoes are the one thing every row shares: no pack here includes them. The third column comes from each listing's pack list, and the fourth is what you add from home, including anything the product photo shows that is not in the box.

What size should we order, and how do we look after it?
The kids' packs here share one age scale: S for 4 to 6 years where the table shows it, M for 7 to 9, L for 10 to 12, and XL for 12 to 14. Treat the age as a starting point and check your child's height and chest against the size guide. Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks. Separately, each listing's size guide gives the measurements, and those are the numbers to go by. If your child falls between two sizes, go up; six of the listings in the table say the same. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs.
Every pack here takes a cold hand wash and an air dry. Wash the pieces one at a time, dry them flat, and keep the washing machine and the tumble dryer out of it. Three of the listings add storage advice: keep the costume flat or loosely folded, or store the hat separately, so it holds its shape.
What should the teacher wear?
A long dark dress and an apron match what the Northamptonshire letter suggests for girls, so teacher and class look like the same century, and a mop cap finishes the look without hunting down a period suit.

Women's Old Time Victorian Maid Costume, £43.99
That outfit comes ready-made in the Women's Old Time Victorian Maid Costume: a long black dress, a laced white apron, and a mop cap, from small (UK 8-10) to XX-large (UK 24-26), with shoes from home. Our historical costumes range has more adult picks across the eras.
Frequently asked questions
It depended on the school and the family, because there was no single Victorian school uniform. Girls wore dresses and pinafores to school and boys wore trousers and a shirt, sometimes with a waistcoat (Object Lessons), while poorer children wore patched, mended clothes that were often second-hand and handed down (V&A teachers' resource). Our Boys Victorian Costume and Girls Victorian Schoolgirl Costume follow that school-pupil look.
Evacuated children carried a gas mask, wore a paper identification tag, and took a bag or suitcase of essentials (World History Encyclopedia). For a school evacuee day, a name label, a small bag, and a cardboard box for the gas mask case make the outfit; our Girls WW2 Evacuee Dress and Coat Costume supplies the dress, coat, and beret.
Yes, and the school letters quoted above suggest it. A Victorian boy needs a white shirt, dark trousers, a waistcoat, and a flat cap; a girl needs a dark dress, an apron, and a mop cap. The waistcoat and cap are the harder pieces to improvise, which is what our Kids Victorian Waistcoat and Cap Costume covers.
Check your school's letter first: some make a bought costume optional and suggest clothes from home. If you want a complete outfit in one go, each pack in the table above lists exactly what is in the box and what to add yourself.
