The best World Book Day costumes and fancy dress for kids are five storybook looks a child will actually keep on all day: a Disney Rapunzel dress, a Wonderland-style Mad Hatter outfit, a fairytale prince, a storybook puppet and a Victorian nanny dress. They don't share one age band, so we've set out each costume's real range below. World Book Day UK and Ireland falls on Thursday 4 March 2027.

What actually matters when you're choosing a World Book Day costume for kids?
Four checks separate a costume that gets worn again from one that comes off by lunch. Run them in this order, then take the pick you land on to the sizing table further down, because on this page the age bands genuinely differ. If you're kitting out the staffroom at the same time, our World Book Day costume guide for teachers and adults covers the adult sizing.
- Recognisable: your child can say who they are in three words, and the class believes them.
- Comfortable for six hours: we build from 125GSM+ breathable fabric, and none of the five below has anything that digs in when they're sat on the carpet.
- Built for the playground: seams that hold through break time, not just the classroom photo.
- No pack-list surprises: know what's in the box before the morning of. One of the five below needs a pair of trousers from your child's own wardrobe, and we say which.
That last point is why we measure the way we do. Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks, and across the range we run more than 500,000 quality checks a year. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs. It's unglamorous work, and it's the only reason we can print a different age band against each of the five picks below instead of one vague label stretched over all of them.
Five storybook picks that check every box

1. Kids Disney Rapunzel Standard Costume: true to the film
The Kids Disney Rapunzel Standard Costume is a genuine Disney costume, styled straight from the film: a purple dress with puffed sleeves and Rapunzel's own braid-and-flower artwork printed on the bodice. Nothing else comes in the pack, and that's the point. There's no headpiece or prop to go missing between lunch and the last bell. The honest caveat is the age band. It runs S (4 to 6 years) and M (7 to 8 years) only, smaller than anything else on this page, so it's a lower-primary costume rather than a whole-school one.
2. Kids Miss Hatter Dress Costume: the one the hat carries
The Kids Miss Hatter Dress Costume is a buttoned dress in teal and pale green with a large pink neck bow, a ribboned top hat carrying the character's own "10/6" price-ticket detail, and a pair of lace gloves. The top hat is what makes the character land, and it's the piece that comes off first if a teacher asks. The Hatter has been in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland since 1865, so we can name him outright, even dressed as Miss Hatter here. One thing to know before you order: this one currently ships in a single size, M (7 to 9 years), so check that band fits before you commit to it over one of the other four.

3. Kids Fairytale Prince Charming Costume: check what's actually in the pack
The Kids Fairytale Prince Charming Costume is a royal blue jacket with gold detailing, red epaulettes, a gold sash and a black belt. Here's the caveat, because it's exactly the sort of thing that ruins a Thursday morning: there are no trousers in the pack. Jacket, sash and belt is what arrives. Black or navy trousers your child already owns finish the look, so check they're washed on the Wednesday. Sizing runs from 3 to 4 years up to L (10 to 12 years), covering nursery through to the middle of primary school; there's no XL on this one, so it's not the pick for an older child.
4. Kids Fairytale Puppet Costume: every prop in one pack
The Kids Fairytale Puppet Costume is the wooden-puppet storybook look, and it's the pick with the most in the box: a yellow top with an attached bow tie, a green waistcoat, red shorts, white gloves, a round feathered hat and a long nose prop. Six pieces in one order; pair with tights and black shoes from home and there's no wardrobe raid at eight in the morning. It's 100% polyester and light with it, which counts for more than it sounds like when the costume goes on over a school jumper in a heated classroom. Sized S (4 to 6 years) through XL (12 to 14 years).

5. Kids Storybook Nanny Costume: the one nobody thinks to search for
The Kids Storybook Nanny Costume is a bright blue skirt and fitted jacket with the white ruffle shirt insert built in, finished with a hat. The Victorian silhouette reads as a nanny from a favourite story without tying it to one exact title, which earns its place when the class photo already has three princesses in it. The built-in insert is the practical part: one layer to get on rather than two, and no shirt to tuck back in after break. Sized S (4 to 6 years) through XL (12 to 14 years).
Getting the sizing right (it isn't one band for all five)
Only two of the five run the full S to XL, age 4 to 14 band. The Rapunzel dress stops at age 8, the Miss Hatter dress currently ships in one size only (age 7 to 9), and the Prince Charming costume tops out at age 12 with no XL. If your child is five, or eleven, that one fact rules a pick in or out before anything else about it matters.
| Costume | Sizes | Age range |
|---|---|---|
| Kids Disney Rapunzel Standard Costume | S, M | 4 to 8 years |
| Kids Miss Hatter Dress Costume | M only | 7 to 9 years |
| Kids Fairytale Prince Charming Costume | 3-4yrs, S, M, L | 3 to 12 years |
| Kids Fairytale Puppet Costume | S to XL | 4 to 14 years |
| Kids Storybook Nanny Costume | S to XL | 4 to 14 years |

All five take a cold hand wash and an air dry, never the washing machine. Read that as an overnight turnaround rather than a one-hour one. A costume that comes home muddy on Thursday afternoon wants washing that evening if it's going out again on Friday. On fit, when your child sits between two bands, take the larger one. A costume worn over a school jumper in early March needs the extra room, and the bigger size is the one still fitting when it goes back in the dressing-up box for next year.
Do you have to buy a full costume for World Book Day?
No. Some UK schools now keep World Book Day costumes optional rather than expected, and the National Literacy Trust's own chief executive has told MPs that schools are increasingly wary of costume-based celebrations that put financial pressure on families (Edexec). Cost is a real factor in that: a February 2025 Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, commissioned by Rakuten, put average expected spend at £19 per child, with 22% feeling pressure to impress and 11% expecting to spend over £50. The National Literacy Trust itself promotes non-costume alternatives, such as top hats and potato characters, alongside the costume options schools have run for years.
If costumes are optional at your school, none of these five is a one-day buy. The puppet and the prince both turn up again at birthday parties and in October. If a costume is expected, the five above need no sewing and no craft evening, and the rest of the range sits in our kids' World Book Day costumes collection. Ordering the night before? Our last-minute World Book Day costumes guide sticks to what still arrives in time, and if the adults are joining in, our funny World Book Day costumes for teachers guide takes the grown-up end a good deal less seriously.
Frequently asked questions
The best World Book Day costumes for kids are storybook looks a classroom can name at a glance: a genuine Disney Rapunzel dress, a Wonderland Mad Hatter outfit, a fairytale prince, a storybook puppet with every prop included, and a Victorian-look storybook nanny. Each is sized honestly rather than as one-size-fits-all, and the pack list is stated plainly for every pick, including the one that needs your child's own trousers underneath.
World Book Day UK and Ireland falls on Thursday 4 March 2027 (National Literacy Trust). It has been the first Thursday in March since 2000, kept separate from UNESCO's international World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April so it doesn't clash with the Easter holidays or St George's Day (House of Lords Library).
No. Some UK schools now keep costumes optional rather than expected, partly in response to the cost pressure a full costume puts on families (Edexec). Check with your child's school before buying if you're unsure.
It depends on the costume, not just the age: only the Fairytale Puppet and Storybook Nanny costumes run the full S (4 to 6 years) through XL (12 to 14 years) band. The Rapunzel dress stops at age 8, the Miss Hatter dress currently ships in one size (age 7 to 9) only, and the Prince Charming costume tops out at age 12 with no XL. Check the sizing table above before ordering rather than assuming every costume covers the same range.
