Kids historical costumes give a school history topic something to show up in, on World Book Day or any week of term. We cover six eras, from Ancient Egypt and Rome through to the Anglo-Saxons, Tudors and Victorians.

Our kids historical costumes, era by era

Each costume commits to one period and gets the tell-tale bits right: headwear, belt, fabric print. A classmate should be able to name the era across the hall.

Boy wearing a medieval knight costume with chainmail-effect top, trousers and boot covers

The Boys Medieval Knight Costume does chainmail without the weight: a chainmail-effect hooded top, trousers with boot covers attached, and a sword and shield. Sizes small to large.

Set an Ancient Rome or Greece topic and the Kids Roman Empress Costume covers it, a white draped dress with gold trim and a gold crown headband to match, sized 4 to 14 years.

Boy wearing an Egyptian pharaoh costume with striped headpiece, collar and adorned belt

Ancient Egypt, in full. The Kids Egyptian Pharaoh Costume layers a decorative collar, golden wrist cuffs and an adorned belt over a white top and trousers, under a striped headpiece, for ages 7 to 14.

White shirt, waistcoat, black trousers, peaked cap: the Kids Victorian Schoolboy Costume reads working-class Victorian the moment it goes on. Ages 7 to 14.

Boy wearing an Anglo Saxon costume with a grey tunic, brown trousers and a Saxon belt

The Kids Anglo Saxon Costume stays plain and accurate, which is the point: a grey tunic over brown trousers with a Saxon belt, ages 7 to 14.

For the Tudors, the Kids Deluxe Tudor Girl Costume comes as a brown skirt with the white apron attached, plus a brown waistcoat, a white top and a matching hat. Ages 7 to 14.

If the topic points elsewhere, the other kids costume themes are one click away, and kids uniform costumes holds the dress-up-as-a-job ideas.

Sizing, fabric and care

Sizing goes by age: usually M (7 to 9), L (10 to 12) and XL (12 to 14), with an S (4 to 6) band on the empress and knight costumes. The knight tops out at L; the rest run to XL. Each product page states its exact band. The fabric is lightweight, breathable 100% polyester throughout, and every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks. Washing is a cold hand wash and an air dry, never the machine.

Frequently asked questions

What are kids historical costumes?

Kids historical costumes are fancy dress outfits built around a period rather than a character: Ancient Egypt, Rome, Anglo-Saxon Britain, the Tudors, the Victorians. Most get bought for World Book Day, a history topic at school or a themed party.

What's a good historical costume for a school project?

Match it to whatever the class is covering. Ancient History points at the Egyptian pharaoh or the Roman empress; an early medieval unit at the knight or the Anglo-Saxon; British history from the Tudors on at the Tudor girl or the Victorian schoolboy. Once the topic is set, the costume mostly picks itself.

What age are these historical costumes suitable for?

Most run age 7 to 14 across three bands (M, L, XL). The empress and the knight start younger, at 4 years (S band), though the knight tops out at L (10 to 12) rather than XL. Each product page states its band.

Do you sell Horrible Histories costumes?

Branded ones, no. We do cover the same ground as the books and the show: Ancient Egypt and Rome through Anglo-Saxon Britain, the Tudors and the Victorians, so a topic sparked by the series still has something to wear.

How do I wash a kids historical costume?

Cold hand wash, then air dry it. Never put it through the machine.
