MorphCostumes party moment
EDINBURGH, SINCE 2009

OUR STORY

We’re MorphCostumes, and we’ve been making fancy dress costumes since 2009. It started with three of us in Edinburgh, Gregor, Fraser and Ali, and one very special party outfit (more on that below).

Fancy dress and costumes have always been a big part of our lives. It started as children, when our parents used to dress us up for the annual town fair. Even at that young age, we loved the response, the attention, and the new friends we made. We soon worked out that fancy dress made life a bit more fun. Fast forward to university and it was much the same (with the addition of a bit of booze). But we got more and more frustrated with the poor quality of the costumes on sale, so we usually just made our own…

In 2009 we met Mr Blue, and this is where it all began.

Gregor, Fraser and Ali went to an athletics and drinking weekend where the theme was ‘wear one colour’. Our best mate Stew Walker turned up in an incredible blue suit. He couldn’t see much and it didn’t fit well, but he was king of the party that night. That was our eureka moment. Inspired by Stew’s outfit and the reaction it got, we thought we could turn the idea into an awesome fancy dress costume. Then we ordered some suits, just six plain colours to start with. We set up a website for £450 (I know what you’re thinking, ‘that much?’) and the Morphsuit phenomenon was born.

Armed with some smart ideas and buoyed by a bit of marketing on Facebook, Morphsuits suddenly began to take off.

So much so that Gregor, Fraser and Ali decided to leave their normal jobs behind. We were tired of working seven days a week!

In 2011 we started our bid for global domination and began selling Morphsuits across the world.

It turned out there were loads of brilliant people who loved Morphsuits everywhere. That gave us the chance to design and make many more costumes: Lederhosen for German carnival, Slenderman for frightening people in North America, and the Aussie flag, to name a few. We also got seriously into social media and started the Morph Hall of Fame. Then we started making costumes for women too.

In 2012, after a few years in the costume industry, we saw a chance to build on the success of Morphsuits and move into the traditional, non-spandex costume market.

So we took the big decision to take investment from the Business Growth Fund (BGF) to let us do even more. We trebled the size of the team, moved out of our living-room office into an actual office, and went from doing just Morphsuits to traditional costumes too.

This was the year Morphsuits went digital, mostly thanks to meeting a NASA scientist called Mark Rober.

After Mark helped put a Mars rover on the red planet, he created an amazing Halloween costume that used a bit of digital trickery to ‘blow a hole’ through his stomach. He owned the Halloween party, posted the video to YouTube, and a couple of million views later he started his own costume company, Digital Dudz. In 2013 Morphsuits acquired Digital Dudz, and we began building his digital innovations into our costumes.

2014 was all about relaunching the brand and raising our game on costume design.

We started as Morphsuits, and we were best known for the word Morph, but as we grew and added non-spandex costumes we changed our name to MorphCostumes. Makes sense. To tell everyone about it, we made an advertising campaign called GetMorph.

2015 was about building on the success of 2014.

Having rebranded from Morphsuits to MorphCostumes, we set out to become the best and most inventive costume makers around. We did create the Morphsuit, after all. We expanded our range of traditional costumes, working closely with suppliers to pick the funniest, scariest and best, so MorphCostumes would be the number one place for the world’s best fancy dress.

It had been a busy and exciting few years.

Alongside our market-leading Morphsuits, which will always have the most special place in our hearts, we now had a big range of our own original costumes, a brilliant selection of officially licensed designs, and more inflatables and Piggybacks than ever. Our Piggyback costumes created an illusion that could fool anyone (especially after a beer or two), and we had become one of the most fun and trusted costume sellers on Amazon.

So yeah, it’s been a pretty wild few years.

The pandemic had a rubbish effect on partying, but we came out the other side stronger than ever. Our design team created more original costumes than ever before, and we signed a deal to sell officially licensed Disney costumes across the UK and Europe. We’re all happy to be back in the office (it’s a pretty cool office, to be fair), working harder than ever to help you party hard and look fantastic. The world is back, and we’re ready for a damn good time.

2023 was a year of reaching further.

We launched in Canada, bringing our costumes to even more people, and kept growing the range. It was also the year we passed £40 million in sales for the first time. With over 1,000 designs on the site, there was something for nearly every occasion, from Halloween and World Book Day to stag and hen dos and every party in between.

2024 marked 15 years since that first suit, and we celebrated by doing something we’re really proud of.

Back in 2012 we’d taken on investment from the Business Growth Fund to help us grow; twelve years on, we bought their stake back, and MorphCostumes became fully founder-owned again. We also launched in Mexico, adding another country to the map, and carried on making more original costumes than ever.

These days we’re a founder-owned business selling across twelve countries, with over 1,300 costumes and 400 accessories, and the same obsession with getting every single costume right.

Halloween 2025 was our biggest yet: we passed £1.5 million in sales in a single day, and across October we now sell a costume roughly every two seconds. We’ve been lucky enough to be recognised along the way, as an EY Entrepreneur of the Year finalist and on the FEBE 100 and Sunday Times Fast Track lists, and we’re working harder than ever to help you party hard and look fantastic.

What’s next

We’re not done yet, not even close. There are more countries to reach, more costumes and accessories to dream up, and a lot more parties to be part of. Whatever we make next, the promise stays the same: a costume that turns up looking like the photo, fits properly and lasts the whole night. And if you wear one, you’re part of the story too.

We make your best times better.
