For a People Who Help Us day, dress your child in the uniform of one job people recognise at a glance: a firefighter, a police officer, a chef, a vet, or a nurse. The quickest route is a complete pack, and a kids fireman costume reads from across a classroom. Our MorphCostumes Kids Fireman Costume comes with 6 pieces, in sizes T2 to Large: a jacket and trousers with reflective trim, a red helmet, a breathing mask, a toy axe, and a working toy fire extinguisher.

What is a People Who Help Us day at school?
A People Who Help Us day is an early years dress-up day, often in nursery or Reception, built around the jobs children see in their community. The phrase is the classroom's name for the topic, and the early years framework behind it names "meeting important members of society such as police officers, nurses and firefighters" among the experiences that build what children know (Department for Education, EYFS statutory framework, September 2026). The Department's Development Matters guidance names the police, the fire service, nurses, and doctors as people Reception children may have come across, and asks three and four-year-olds to "show interest in different occupations" (Development Matters).
The costume often has to carry the day on its own. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, for one, says it cannot offer fire engine visits or station visits for People Who Help Us (Devon and Somerset FRS). So the uniform your child arrives in is the closest thing to a firefighter some classes will see that week.
Police is a family favourite: between 23 April and 25 October 2026, a police costume was in two of every five orders on morphsuits.co.uk that included a kids' job costume (our own GA4 order data). The same packs do a second shift on World Book Day, which our guide to World Book Day costumes for kids covers.
What makes a job costume recognisable?
Four details make a job costume readable from across a playground, and a costume needs at least three of them:
- The hat. A helmet, a peaked cap, a chef's hat, or a surgical cap does most of the work. Some dressing-up sets leave the hat out, so check the pack list before you buy.
- The colour. Fluorescent yellow says police, red or black with reflective bands says fire, all-white says chef, green scrubs say vet.
- One tool. A radio, an axe, a wooden spoon, or a soft toy patient gives your child something to do with their hands.
- A badge or patch. The small detail children point at when they explain who they are.
Every pick below is checked against that list, with what is in the pack and what to add from home. Our kids uniform costumes range holds the full set of jobs.
What should a kids firefighter costume include?
A kids firefighter costume needs a helmet, a jacket with reflective bands, and one piece of kit to hold. England's fire and rescue services employed 30,601 full-time equivalent firefighters on 31 March 2025, and 9.7% of firefighters were women, up from 7.0% five years earlier (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government). Parents search for a fireman costume, but the job title is firefighter, which is worth telling the class. In Devon and Somerset, firefighters and crew managers wear yellow helmets and watch managers and above wear white (Devon and Somerset FRS); the helmets in our kids' firefighter packs are red.

Kids Fireman Costume
Six pieces, from the helmet to the toy extinguisher: the Kids Fireman Costume pairs a black jacket and trousers with reflective trim with a red helmet, a breathing mask, a toy axe, and a working toy fire extinguisher, in four sizes from T2 to Large. Only shoes come from home. Pair it with a pink Kids Firefighter Helmet, sold singly or in packs of up to 12, if a younger sibling or the whole party wants to join the crew.
Boys Red Firefighter Costume
For an all-red look, the Boys Red Firefighter Costume has a red high-vis top and trousers, a red helmet, a black gas mask, a toy axe, and a water-spraying toy fire extinguisher, in Small, Medium, and Large for ages 4 to 12. The trousers are elasticated and the top is loose, so most children can dress themselves. Add a Kids Firefighter Helmet and Axe Set so a friend can play the second firefighter.

How do you make a police costume look British?
A British police costume needs two details: a fluorescent yellow high-vis vest and a black-and-white chequered band. The chequered band on police caps was made standard in Glasgow in 1932 under Chief Constable Percy Sillitoe, and stayed Scottish until the rest of the UK's forces adopted it in 1974 (Glasgow Police Museum). The 43 police forces of England and Wales had 145,886 full-time equivalent officers on 31 March 2026 (Home Office), so children may well have seen that pattern on an officer near them.

Kids UK Police Officer Costume
Both British details are built in. The Kids UK Police Officer Costume has a shirt with an attached tie, a high-vis police vest, trousers with chequered cuffs, a police hat, a toy radio, a truncheon, and handcuffs, in Small and Medium for ages 4 to 9. If a grown-up is playing the robber, the Plastic Handcuffs and Ankle Shackles Set fits most adult wrists and ankles; our cop and prisoner costume guide has the rest of that look.
Kids Blue Police Costume
For a child who would rather wear a dress, the Kids Blue Police Costume comes with a blue police dress with patches, a hat, a utility belt, a badge, toy handcuffs, a whistle, and a radio. It starts at a Toddler size for ages 3 to 4 and runs to Large, with an elastic waistband. Leggings or tights from home keep it warm on a cold school day.

For a child who wants the American look from films, the Kids USA Police Sergeant Costume is navy with gold trim, a belt with a holster, a badge, a whistle, and a toy radio, from Toddler (3 to 4 years) to Large.
What goes in a chef, vet, or nurse costume?
Chef, vet, and nurse costumes are mostly about the hat and the colour, so a three or four-piece pack covers them. Each pick below comes in four letter sizes covering ages 4 to 14, so an older brother or sister can join in too.

Kids Chef Costume
Three pieces make the chef: the Kids Chef Costume has a white chef's top, chequered trousers, and a chef's hat. The rolling pin, spoon, and pot in the photo are props, so borrow a wooden spoon from the kitchen drawer for the tool. The trousers are cut for free movement, which helps when the role play turns into a pretend cafe.
Boys Vet Costume
Green scrubs with a vet patch on the chest, plus a cap and a face mask: that is the whole Boys Vet Costume, and the photo shows a girl and a boy wearing it. The tool comes from home: a favourite soft toy becomes the patient, and a toy stethoscope from the dressing-up box finishes it.

For a nurse, decide first whether the class wants a nurse from today or from history. A modern nurse can be made from home with a blue or green top and a toy stethoscope. The historical nurse is Florence Nightingale (1820 to 1910), who reached Constantinople on 3 November 1854 to nurse soldiers at nearby Scutari, earned the name "the Lady with the Lamp" after The Times reported her night rounds of the wards with a light, and set up the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas's Hospital in 1860 (National Army Museum).

Girls Florence Nightingale Costume
The Girls Florence Nightingale Costume is a long navy dress, a white apron, and a bonnet. There is no lamp in the pack, and a battery tea light in a jam jar is the safe way to add one. The same costume works for a Victorian day, which our school history day guide covers.
Can a pilot count as a helper?
A pilot counts when the school frames the day as "what do you want to be when you grow up". Pilot costumes were in more than one in six of our kids' job-costume orders between 23 April and 25 October 2026 (our own GA4 order data). The flight suit is one piece, so it goes on fast on a school morning.
Boys Air Cadet Fighter Pilot Costume
The Boys Air Cadet Fighter Pilot Costume is a green aviator jumpsuit with military-style badges and a matching green hat. Boots and a pair of toy goggles from home finish it. For the grown-up version of the look, our aviator and pilot fancy dress guide has the adult flight suits.

Which helpers can you make from the wardrobe?
Four common helpers need no bought costume at all, because their uniform is mostly high-vis or everyday clothes. Development Matters itself lists delivery staff and shop staff among the people Reception children may have come across (Development Matters):
- School crossing patrol: a high-vis vest or coat and a lollipop sign made from a paper plate, card, and a cardboard tube.
- Postal worker: a red top, a shoulder bag, and a bundle of envelopes your child has addressed themselves.
- Builder: a high-vis vest, wellies, a checked shirt, and a toy tool belt.
- Doctor or paramedic: a green or blue top, a toy stethoscope, and a bandage roll.
Check your school's letter first, since some make a bought costume optional.
Can a parent match their child?
Yes, and two of our adult uniforms match the kids' packs above. A matching parent helps on a careers day where grown-ups are invited in, or at a fancy dress party where the whole family goes as one crew. Our adult uniform costumes range has more jobs for grown-ups.

Men's Firefighter Costume
The Men's Firefighter Costume is a five-piece set: a black jacket with high-visibility style trim, matching trousers with an elasticated waist, a grey t-shirt, braces, and a helmet, in Medium to 2X-Large. The black jacket with yellow bands matches the jacket in the Kids Fireman Costume. There is no axe in the set, so pair it with the adult Firefighter Helmet and Axe Costume Set.
Men's Police Officer Costume
The Men's Police Officer Costume is the American look in navy: a shirt with a tie and badge-style patches, trousers with an elasticated waist, a police hat, a belt with a radio, and handcuffs, in Medium to XXX-Large. It matches the Kids USA Police Sergeant Costume for an American patrol of two. The pack has no baton, so add the Police Baton Prop Twin Pack, two lightweight plastic batons about 20.5 inches long.

What is in each pack, and what do you add from home?
Shoes are the one thing no pack here includes. The third column comes from each listing's pack list, and the fourth is what to add from home, including anything the photo shows that is not in the box.

What size should you order, and how do you keep it safe?
Order by your child's measurements, not their age alone, and size up if they fall between two sizes; the listings for the Kids Fireman, Chef, Vet, Florence Nightingale, and Air Cadet costumes all give that advice. Most of our kids' letter sizes follow one scale (Small is ages 4-6, Medium 7-9, Large 10-12, X-Large 12-14), and several packs add a Toddler size for 3 to 4 years. Each listing's size guide has the measurements to check against. As a brand, we run over 500,000 quality checks a year.
Keep any fancy dress costume away from candles and open flames. London Fire Brigade notes that children's costumes are classed as toys and must meet flammability rules under toy safety law, and advises keeping them away from open flames and heat sources (London Fire Brigade). All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs.
Our fabric costumes take a cold hand wash and an air dry: take the hat, radio, and other toy pieces off first, and do not machine wash them. Wipe helmets, axes, and batons clean with a cloth.
Frequently asked questions
Not in itself: in England and Wales, section 90 of the Police Act 1996 makes it an offence to impersonate a police officer with intent to deceive, or to wear police uniform in circumstances calculated to deceive, and Scotland (Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012, section 92) and Northern Ireland (Police (Northern Ireland) Act 1998, section 67) have similar rules, so the offence is impersonation or deception, not wearing an obvious fancy dress costume.
The uniform of one job your child can explain: a firefighter, a police officer, a chef, a vet, or a nurse are the classics. Aim for three of the four details that make a job readable: the hat, the colour, one tool, and a badge. Our Kids Fireman Costume and Kids UK Police Officer Costume both come with the hat and the tools in the pack.
The early years framework names police officers, nurses, and firefighters, and Development Matters adds doctors, shop and delivery staff, and teachers (Development Matters). Schools often widen it to vets, chefs, builders, postal workers, crossing patrols, and pilots.
Not always: a high-vis vest makes a crossing patrol or a builder, and a green top with a toy stethoscope makes a doctor. A pack earns its place for the jobs that are hard to improvise, such as a firefighter's helmet and reflective bands or a chef's hat.
A cold hand wash and an air dry for the fabric pieces, with the toy accessories taken off first, and a wipe with a cloth for helmets and props. Keep fancy dress costumes away from candles and open flames.
