Further south, a bird-scarer record at the University of Reading's Museum of English Rural Life notes that boys were once employed for "crow-starving" when the corn was planted.

How do you make a scarecrow costume look scary rather than cute?
To give a scarecrow costume a scarier edge, try darker colours, rough burlap texture, and face make-up; the costume itself can stay the same. Bright patches, a sunflower, and rosy cheeks make the friendly version, and that is great fun too. For the frightening one, we change four things.
- Face: a beige or sack-brown base, dark shading round the eyes, and thin black stitch lines from the corners of the mouth. Our women's patch dress photo shows the stitched-smile version.

Is a straw costume safe near pumpkins and candles?
Straw and real flames do not mix, so keep loose straw, raffia, and capes away from naked flames, and light pumpkins with LED candles. The London Fire Brigade's October 2025 Halloween advice warns about costumes around candles, and asks parents to check packaging and labels for a UKCA or CE mark plus the seller's details.
Warwickshire Trading Standards' 2019 advice, part of the Office for Product Safety and Standards' national Halloween campaign, makes the same call: very few items of clothing are completely flame retardant, so use LED lights instead of flames. For children's dress-up, the British Retail Consortium's voluntary code, updated in 2022, keeps a maximum flame spread of 10mm per second, against 30mm per second in the EN 71-2 toy standard, according to testing house Intertek.
How do scarecrow costume sizes and care work?
