What makes a family Halloween costume work?

A family costume earns its money when one theme stretches across every size in the house, from the pushchair to the adults. UK Halloween spending was projected to reach £779 million in 2025, with 55% of Brits planning a purchase at an average of £26 each, according to Finder's Halloween statistics, and that £26 covers costumes, decorations and the rest of the night, so a family kitting out four people is planning well above the average shopper. Check three things first:

• Does the theme run the whole size range? Check the smallest and the tallest can both get the look before the family votes, not after. Nobody does this first, and it is what ruins a set.
• Can the scare level vary inside it? A skull can grin or it can be cracked and menacing, so one theme can cover the youngest and the oldest in the family without either compromising.
• Is it one basket? One order means one size logic and one delivery, and nobody's costume turns up on 2 November.

What are good scary Halloween costumes for a family?

Skeletons and two-headed ghouls are the good scary ones, because a skull reads as Halloween at ten paces and needs no gore to do it. The scary ones are what families search for: across the four family-costume queries we track in our own Google Search Console data for the 90 days to 20 September 2026, the two that include the word scary account for 485 of 729 impressions. 1. The skeleton crew

Four skeletons, four different looks, no two people in the same suit. That is why we keep coming back to bones for a mixed-age family. 2. The two-headed duo

Two costumes, four heads between them. This is the scariest set on the page, and the one we would think hardest about before buying it for a nervous child. The Skeleton Costume Two Headed Mens pairs a hooded jumpsuit printed with bones and a separate mask carrying a self-stuffed second head, in adult sizes L (42-44 inch chest) and XL (46-48 inch). How scary is too scary for the youngest?

Scariness depends on the child, and we will not pretend otherwise: we give no age guidance beyond the size range printed on each product page. The Child Mind Institute, a US children's mental health charity, notes that young children can struggle to tell imaginary monsters from reality, and gives itchy fabric, a tight sleeve or a mask as examples of what can tip a child into a meltdown. So for the littlest in the family we look for three things on the product page: soft fabric, a face left uncovered, and a hood that comes off when the night runs long.

3. The little monsters

Two monsters with no mask between them, both cut for the smallest in the family. 4. The striped ghosts

How do we size a whole family from one order?

Size each person by the measurement their own product page asks for, then put the lot in one basket. Not every costume is sized the same way, which is the unglamorous bit of a family order: the floral bodysuit goes by UK dress size, the two-headed adult suit by chest, and most of the kids' costumes by age or height. How do we keep the family visible and the costumes looking good?

Keep children visible in the dark, check the label and keep costumes away from flames. RoSPA's Halloween costume advice says children should ideally wear something reflective and carry a torch, that costumes should carry a UKCA or UKNI mark on the label, and that children should always be supervised by a suitable adult. Most of the costumes above are black, so a reflective strip and a torch matter more here than with a bright costume.

After the night, none of these goes in the machine: all 10 product pages say hand wash only and air dry, and several specify cool water.
