Both of our toddler Christmas costumes are one piece that goes on like a coat. They are hooded all-in-ones in two sizes, Small for ages 1 to 2 and Large for ages 3 to 4, with the character built into the hood, so there is no headband to pull off and no hat to lose at nursery.

Which school date needs which costume?
Three December dates are worth putting in the diary, and each one asks for something different. Check the school newsletter for the local version, because dates and dress codes vary by school.
- Elf Day, Wednesday 2 December 2026. Alzheimer's Society runs Elf Day on the first Wednesday of December and asks people to dress up as an elf to raise money (Alzheimer's Society). Any of our three elf costumes fits the brief.
- Christmas Jumper Day, Thursday 10 December 2026. Save the Children's fundraiser is a jumper day; the charity's page counts "26m+ children & teachers" who "have made things better in a sweater". Its advice is to get a jumper second-hand, not new (Save the Children). Antlers or an elf hat over the jumper adds a costume touch.
- The class party and the last week of term. Many English councils end the autumn term on Friday 18 December 2026; Haringey's published term dates are one example. Your school newsletter has the class party date, and a party is where the full costume earns its outing.
Order for the earliest date on the list, not the last one. One costume can then do Elf Day, the class party, and the family gathering without a second purchase.
How do you keep a Christmas costume from feeling scratchy?
A soft layer under the costume helps stop a Christmas costume feeling scratchy. NHS children's occupational therapists give the same advice for everyday clothes: the Humber Sensory Processing Hub suggests lycra, bike shorts, or vests under clothing for children who are sensitive to how clothes feel (Humber Sensory Processing Hub, NHS).
Labels and seams are the usual culprits. The Bedfordshire and Luton children's occupational therapy service notes that some children find seams against the skin "uncomfortable and sometimes physically painful", and that cutting out labels "can immediately help your child feel comfortable in their clothing" (NHS, reviewed November 2024). Three habits help on the day:
