A school nativity play usually asks for five costumes: Mary, Joseph, a shepherd, a wise man (sometimes called a king), and a sheep, with an angel cast in some schools too. We stock a nativity costume for every one of those roles except the angel, sized from age 4 up to adult, in stock now and ready to post the same week the letter comes home.
The nativity costume checklist: every role at a glance
Every nativity role comes down to the same three questions: what's in the pack, what age does it fit, and is it actually in stock this week. The table answers all three for every role, including the one where the last answer is no.
| Role | What's in the pack | Size range | In stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mary (girls) | White tunic, royal blue cape, belt, headdress | 4 sizes, ages 4-14 | Yes |
| Mary (adult / teacher-helper) | Dress with attached cape, waist tie, hood | UK 8-10 to 20-22 | Yes |
| Joseph | Blue tunic, brown jacket, rope belt, headpiece | 4 sizes, ages 4-14 | Yes |
| Shepherd | White tunic, striped jacket, rope belt, headdress | 4 sizes, ages 4-14 | Yes |
| Gold wise man | Satin tunic, trimmed jacket, rope belt, crown | 4 sizes, ages 4-14 | Yes |
| Blue / red king | Jersey robe, metallic-print vest, headdress, crown | 4 sizes, Toddler (3-4) to Large | Yes |
| Sheep | Hooded top | 4 sizes, ages 4-14 | Yes |

Mary: two versions, kids and adult
Two Mary costumes sometimes get asked for, not one: the girl on stage, and an adult helper or teacher in a matching look for the church service or the class photo. We carry both.

1. Kids Mary Nativity Costume: the four-piece classic
The MorphCostumes Kids Mary Nativity Costume is a four-piece set: a long white tunic, a royal blue cape, a matching belt and a white headdress. It runs in four sizes from Small (ages 4-6) to X-Large (ages 12-14), so one costume covers reception through to Year 6. It's made from 100% polyester: a cold hand wash and an air dry, never machine wash, which matters when the dress rehearsal and the performance are two days apart.
2. Women's Mary Nativity Costume: the teacher-helper cut
The MorphCostumes Women's Mary Nativity Costume covers the adult version of the role: a dress with an attached cape, a waist tie and a hood, all in one piece so there's nothing separate to lose backstage. Sizing runs UK 8-10 up to 20-22 across four sizes, wide enough to skip measuring anyone first. It's the pick for a teacher or parent helper standing alongside the class.

Joseph: the quiet lead

3. Kids Joseph Nativity Costume: layered, not just a robe
The MorphCostumes Kids Joseph Nativity Costume layers a brown jacket over a long blue tunic, finished with a white rope-effect belt and a matching headpiece. It slips on over regular clothes, useful since this role is often first on, last off. Four sizes cover ages 4 to 14; a cold hand wash and an air dry, never in the machine.
Shepherd (and the innkeeper mix-up)
A shepherd costume and an innkeeper costume are close enough that Argos sells one costume as "Shepherd or Inn Keeper", so a letter that says "shepherd or innkeeper, whatever's left" isn't being vague on purpose. The tunic-and-headdress shape covers either role.
4. Kids Nativity Grey Shepherd Costume: works for shepherd or innkeeper
The MorphCostumes Kids Nativity Grey Shepherd Costume pairs a white tunic with a grey striped overlay trimmed in gold, a rope belt and a matching headdress. It covers shepherd or innkeeper without a second order, and stands in for Joseph if his goes missing. Four sizes, ages 4 to 14, and the same cold hand wash and air dry as everything else here.

Wise man or king: same role, two names
Retailers use both names for this role, sometimes separately, so search either "wise man costume" or "nativity king costume" and expect the same style of robe. We stock it in three colourways. Gold is the five-piece satin set detailed below, sized 4 to 14 years; blue and red are a simpler jersey robe and vest set with their own size run, Toddler (3-4) through Large, so check sizing before ordering either.

5. Kids Nativity Gold Wise Man Costume: the crown pick
The MorphCostumes Kids Nativity Gold Wise Man Costume is a gold satin tunic under an olive-green trimmed jacket, with a rope belt, a headpiece and a crown hat, five pieces, visible from the back row of a school hall. Four sizes, ages 4 to 14. The listing doesn't mention a beard, and the blue and red costumes confirm theirs don't include one either, so plan for a beard separately if your school wants the full look.
Sheep, and the role we don't stock yet
A sheep costume needs to do one job well: read as a sheep from the third row while a five-year-old can still sit down in it. A hooded jacket over the child's own trousers keeps a fidgety five-year-old dressed and seated through a full rehearsal, and it's the one role here with no adult version to size separately.
6. Kids Nativity Sheep Jacket Costume: fast on, fast off
The MorphCostumes Kids Nativity Sheep Jacket Costume is a fluffy hooded top with two 3D ears sewn into the hood, worn straight over your child's own trousers. Velcro fastenings get it on in seconds, useful when the role covers two performances in a day. Unisex, four sizes, ages 4 to 14.

An angel costume is the one role on the checklist we don't currently stock. If your school has cast an angel, a plain white dress with a tinsel halo and costume wings from a general fancy dress range is the honest workaround for now; we'd rather say that plainly than list something we don't actually sell.
Getting the fit and the wash right
Most of the costumes here are made by us and run four sizes, Small to X-Large, roughly ages 4 to 14; every MorphCostumes design is measured across 30+ points by garment techs trained in tailoring at the prototype stage. Two exceptions: the sheep jacket is made by a different UK costume maker, and the wise man's blue and red colourways run their own band, Toddler (3-4) through Large, not that range. If your child sits between two sizes, size up. Every costume here layers over a school uniform or a base layer, and a little extra room beats a snug fit through a rehearsal week.
Care is the same rule across the range: a cold hand wash and an air dry, never a washing machine and never a tumble dryer. A nativity costume usually sees one dress rehearsal and one performance in a week, so it rarely needs a wash before the show, but a sleeve that picks up paint or glitter is worth treating the same evening rather than leaving it to set.
The letter came home three days ago: buy or make?
A nativity costume request can land with days' notice rather than weeks, and that's a scheduling problem as much as a costume one. A December 2024 Teacher Tapp survey, a UK daily teacher-polling platform, found half of teachers had sent a child to the medical room in the surveyed week (Teacher Tapp, 2024). That's an illness stat, not a costume one, but it explains the pattern: an understudy gets cast with no warning and needs a costume that's in stock, not on backorder.
Making a costume at home is a genuine option, not a fallback. The Church of England's own guidance on dressing children for Christmas suggests a pillowcase and tea towel for Mary, Joseph and shepherd, tinsel for an angel's halo, and an old curtain for a king's cape (Church of England). Fine with an evening to spare; it falls down on short notice, where a bought costume that's sized and in stock takes the guesswork out of "by Thursday."
Frequently asked questions
Most schools cast five core roles: Mary, Joseph, a shepherd, a wise man or king, and a sheep, with an angel or innkeeper cast sometimes. We stock a costume for every role except the angel, each sized from age 4 up to adult, in the MorphCostumes nativity costume range.
Mary traditionally wears a long white or pale tunic with a blue cloak or cape and a matching headdress. The MorphCostumes Kids Mary Nativity Costume follows that shape as a four-piece set, and we also carry a matching women's version for a teacher or parent helper playing the role or helping out.
Yes, "wise man" and "king" describe the same nativity role, and retailers use both names for the same style of costume. Ours comes in three colourways, gold, blue and red, for three wise men in one class. Gold is sized 4 to 14 years; blue and red run their own band, Toddler through Large.
Often, yes. The tunic-and-headdress shape works for both roles, which is why Argos sells one costume as "Shepherd or Inn Keeper". The MorphCostumes Kids Nativity Grey Shepherd Costume covers either casting without needing a second costume.
Not currently. Every other core role is in stock and sized from age 4 to adult, but we don't yet have a dedicated angel costume. A plain white dress with a tinsel halo and separately bought wings is the practical stand-in until we do.
Yes, a cold hand wash and an air dry. None of our nativity costumes, fabric pieces or the sheep jacket go in a washing machine or a tumble dryer, so treat any mark the same evening it happens rather than waiting for a full wash.
Whichever of the five roles your school has handed you, the full nativity costume and fancy dress range has it sized and in stock, and our kids Christmas costumes cover the rest of the season once the nativity's done. We make your best times better with costumes.
