What does the classic Alice in Wonderland look actually consist of?
The look comes from John Tenniel's black-and-white illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871). It was the second book that set the shape everyone now recognises: striped stockings and a hairband, a look the V&A calls "iconic and much imitated". That hairband is generally credited as the origin of the everyday name for the accessory, the "Alice band".
Colour came later, and it took a few tries to settle. When Tenniel coloured twenty of his own drawings for The Nursery "Alice", printed in 1889 and published in 1890, Alice's dress came out yellow with blue trim and a white apron, not blue. The all-blue dress most people picture today came from later illustrated editions, and it is the look we build our costumes to. Both Carroll's text and Tenniel's original illustrations are in the public domain in the UK, per the Lewis Carroll Society, which is why we can call our costumes exactly what they are: a real Alice look, not a "storybook character" workaround.
