A black and red ninja costume works because the colour does the heavy lifting: a black base, red crossing the chest and waist, red down the arms and legs, and nothing else competing for attention. The parts that let it down are always the same two, a mask that slides and a hood that will not stay up, which is why our womens ninja jumpsuit has its hood attached and its mask in the box. Get the base layer right and the rest of the look takes about two minutes.

Start with the base layer, not the accessories
Most ninja fancy dress goes wrong in the same order: sword first, mask second, actual costume last. Work the other way round. The base layer decides the silhouette, and the silhouette is what people recognise across a room.

Womens Ninja Costume Black/Red
The one we would put first. A full-length black jersey jumpsuit with an attached hood, cap sleeves and a back zip, finished with a red waist tie, red arm warmers laced over in black, and red straps criss-crossing the legs. A separate red strapless top, a mask, a plastic dagger and toy throwing stars come with it. Four sizes, Small to X-Large. The long sword in the photograph is not included.
The rest of our ninja costume range sits around the same idea: one piece that carries the shape with the fiddly parts attached. The same rule holds across our wider TV and film fancy dress range.
The hood and mask are the bits that fail
A ninja look lives or dies on the face covering, and this is where cheap fancy dress falls apart. A mask tied at the back works loose every time you turn your head; a shallow hood slips off within an hour. Both are design problems, not user error, so check how the hood attaches before you buy. The jumpsuit above, the black and silver playsuit and both kids sets have theirs built in; only the red dragon playsuit ships its hood separately.
Black MorphMask
For full face coverage that stays put, this is the honest answer. A one-piece lycra hood in 91% polyester and 9% elastane, stretching over most adult heads with nothing to work loose. You can see, breathe and drink through the fabric, the practical test any face covering has to pass at a party. One size, on in a second.

Worn under a hood it also closes the gap at the neck, the strip of bare skin that gives a good outfit away.
Put the red where it reads
Red on black only works if it lands on the lines the eye already follows: across the chest and waist, down the forearms and calves, at the throat. Scatter it elsewhere and you get a pattern, not a costume.

Two playsuits do exactly that, in a shorter cut than the jumpsuit above.

Womens Dragon Ninja Playsuit Costume
The shorter cut, and the one that carries the print. A black playsuit with red crossing the chest and waist, a red dragon across the front panel, and red ties wrapping the arms and legs. The mask, the hood and the red choker are all included. It is 100% polyester, lightweight and stretchy, in sizes Small to X-Large.
Womens Dragon Ninja Playsuit Costume in Black and Silver
Silver instead of red, and built differently: a jersey playsuit with a back zip, an attached overskirt dragon panel, attached leg straps and an attached hood, plus a choker and a separate mask. It runs Small to 3XL, six sizes, the widest fit range in our ninja range.

What actually comes in the pack
No unwanted surprises is one of the four commitments in the Morph Promise, and ninja fancy dress is where it matters most: these listings are photographed with props, and plenty of it is not in the box.
- The womens ninja jumpsuit arrives with the jumpsuit, its attached hood, attached leg straps and a waist tie, plus a separate red strapless top, red arm warmers, a mask, a plastic dagger and toy throwing stars. Long swords are not included.
- The womens dragon ninja playsuits arrive with the playsuit, a mask and hood, and the choker. Again, no boots and no swords.
- The kids black and red ninja set includes the jumpsuit, gloves, an attached belt, a shaped hood with a detachable face mask, two plastic toy daggers and two foam throwing stars.
- The girls dragon ninja set includes the hooded tunic, arm cuffs, leg cuffs, a face mask and two toy daggers.
- The Black MorphMask is the mask alone, one piece, no ties.
Size it so it lasts the night
Every costume we make goes through over 30 measurement checks, and we run over 500,000 quality checks a year. That is the work behind the size chart, and on a fitted costume the chart is worth two minutes of your time before you order.
Two rules. The adult cuts are fitted, so if you fall between two sizes, size up; the ties take up the difference, and something you cannot sit down in is a long night. Children's sets are sized by age band, and the same advice holds: between bands, take the larger.
Black and red ninja costumes for kids
The black and red look scales down better than most: it reads at a distance, needs no face paint, and the pieces that usually get lost are stitched on. Both kids sets below are cut for running about, the only performance test that counts on a doorstep.

Kids Black And Red Deadly Ninja Costume
An all-in-one jumpsuit with a padded muscle chest, red trim and printed detail, finished with a shaped hood and a detachable face mask so a child can cover up or uncover without removing the costume. Gloves and an attached belt come with it, along with two plastic toy daggers and two foam throwing stars. Five sizes run from toddler at 3 to 4 years up to 12 to 14 years.
Girls Black and Red Dragon Ninja Costume
A hooded tunic with a hand-printed dragon across a red front panel, plus arm cuffs, leg cuffs, a face mask and two toy daggers. The fabric is a stretchy 100% polyester, so it gives rather than pulls when a child moves in it. Four sizes, Small through X-Large.

Two honest notes for younger children. Both kids sets carry toy daggers, and the black and red set adds foam throwing stars, so neither is suitable under three years of age because of the small parts; both also carry a keep-away-from-fire warning. Second, know what the safety bar is. After a costume fire injured a child in 2014, the British Retail Consortium published a code of practice on the flammability of children's disguise costumes capping flame spread at 10mm per second, three times stricter than the 30mm per second the general toy standard allows. Ask any seller which of the two their children's range is tested to.
There is more of the range in our kids ninja costumes section, including other colourways of the same dragon design. If you are shopping for the wider season rather than one look, our guides to the best kids Halloween costumes and Halloween costumes for boys cover the same ground across more themes.
Keeping it wearable after the party
Printed fabric does not like heat. Cold hand wash and air dry, reshaping while still damp. Do not machine wash a printed ninja costume and do not tumble dry it; that is how a crisp dragon print turns into a cracked one. Dry it away from a radiator, not on one.
The toy daggers and throwing stars are plastic and foam, so they wipe clean. Check they all go back in the bag afterwards; those are the pieces that vanish under a sofa.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on the set, so check the pack list before you buy. Our womens ninja jumpsuit includes the jumpsuit with its attached hood, leg straps and waist tie, plus a red strapless top, arm warmers, a mask, a plastic dagger and toy throwing stars. The kids set adds gloves, a belt, two plastic toy daggers and two foam throwing stars. Boots and swords shown in styling photographs are not included.
Use a face covering that is attached or stretch-fitted rather than tied. Ties work loose as you turn your head, which is why our kids ninja set uses a detachable mask on a shaped hood, and why the Black MorphMask is a single stretch lycra piece with nothing to fasten. Wearing a stretch mask under a hood also closes the gap at the neck.
Every costume we make goes through over 30 measurement checks, so the size chart is the thing to trust rather than your usual high-street size. The playsuits are a fitted cut, so size up if you are between two sizes and use the adjustable arm and leg ties to take up the slack. Children's sets are sized by age band; between bands, take the larger.
Cold hand wash and air dry only. These are printed polyester fabrics, so a machine cycle or a tumble dryer will crack the print and shorten the life of the costume considerably. Hang it to dry away from direct heat and it will store well between events.
Not in that exact colourway at the moment. Our adult ninja fancy dress in black and red is cut for women, and the only men's option in the ninja range is a samurai warrior costume, a different silhouette in blue with red armour. For a men's black look, the Black MorphMask worn with black clothing is the straightforward route.
Get the base layer, the hood and the sizing right, and this is one of the few costumes you can wear all night. We make your best times better with costumes.
