What does a classic green-and-black witch look like?

A classic witch is a long black dress, a tall pointed hat, and a flash of green in the fabric or on the face; our two women's versions take one route each. One theory ties the hat to Wales: writing for The Conversation, an Aberystwyth University researcher notes speculation among some researchers that the tall black hats worn by women in early modern Wales inspired the wide-brimmed hat of the fairy-tale witch.

• The hat: in every fabric costume pack except Yennefer's; the cauldron's inflatable witch wears hers built in. For a bigger one on a DIY look, our crooked black velour witch hat has a wide brim and a satin buckle.
• The broom: not included. The brooms in some of our product photos are props, so bring your own for the pictures. The oldest known picture of a witch on a broomstick is a tiny marginal drawing in a 1451 French manuscript of the poem Le Champion des Dames.
• Green face paint: only with the women's black witch dress above. If it's a new face paint for you, the US Food and Drug Administration suggests trying a dab on your arm for a couple of days before it goes on your face.
• Glasses: included with both long black dress costumes, women's and girls'.

For kids' costumes, London Fire Brigade advises looking for a UKCA or CE marking on the packaging of children's fancy dress costumes and keeping any costume clear of candles and tea lights, including the one in your pumpkin. All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs. For care, hand wash each fabric witch gently in cool water, dry it flat, and wash or store the hat separately so it keeps its shape. Take the cauldron's fan and battery pack out before you hand wash it, and let it air dry fully before you reinflate it.
