Do glow-in-the-dark skeleton costumes glow all night?
No glow-in-the-dark print stays at full brightness all night: the pigment stores light and gives it back as a glow that starts fading once the lights go down. A Ghent University review puts the afterglow at anything "from seconds to many hours", and the review times that afterglow until the glow drops to about 100 times the faintest light a dark-adapted eye can detect (Van den Eeckhout and colleagues, Materials, 2010). The same review reports strontium aluminate pigments more than ten times brighter than older zinc sulphide ones, with a much longer afterglow, and that the pigments are typically charged by ultraviolet light.
