The best adult pirate costume matches the pirate you picture: a captain in a coat and hat, a deckhand in one quick outfit, or a buccaneer coat over a dress. We make all three, and list what's in each box. Since late April 2026, the Rum Smuggler has made up about half of our adult fabric pirate costume sales, though women's pirate pages draw roughly nine in ten of the impressions our adult pirate pages earn.

Which pirate are you: captain, deckhand, or buccaneer?
Each full pirate costume we make comes in one of three shapes, and the shape decides how many pieces you put on and how freely you move. A captain look layers a coat over a shirt and waistcoat, with trousers, boot covers, and a hat. A deckhand look is one dress, or a tunic and trousers, and you're dressed in minutes. A buccaneer look sits between the two: a coat over a dress. None of the three is the "right" pirate; they're different amounts of dressing.

| Look | What ships in the box | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Captain | Jacket with attached shirt and waistcoat, trousers, belts, boot covers, scarf, scabbard, tricorn hat with wig | The full multi-piece outfit, ready to wear |
| Buccaneer | Layered coat, dress and feathered hat, three pieces | A captain-adjacent look with more coverage |
| Deckhand | One-piece dress or shirt-and-trousers set, bandana or hat | Fast to put on, easy to move and dance in |
| Build-your-own | A single lace-up pirate shirt over your own trousers or skirt | Layering onto clothes you already own |
Best women's pirate costumes
Four women's looks, three pieces in each box.

1. Women's Buccaneer Pirate Costume
The Women's Buccaneer Pirate Costume is our layered pick: a black coat over a white dress with a frill hem, topped with a feathered pirate hat. The full coat suits a cold night or an outdoor venue. Five sizes, UK 8-10 to 24-26; check your bust and hip against the chart, not your usual size. The sword and boots in the photo are styling, not in the pack.
2. Pirate Costume For Women Red & Black
The Pirate Costume For Women Red & Black is the captain-hat option: a red and black striped skirt, an all-in-one white top with a brown corset overlay, and a pirate hat with skull and crossbones detail. Four sizes, UK 8-10 to 20-22. The sabre and boots in our photo aren't included.

3. Women's Pirate Deckhand Costume
For the fastest look here, the Women's Pirate Deckhand Costume is one dress, not a coat and a dress: an off-the-shoulder dress with a white top and a ragged striped skirt, plus a striped bandana and an eye patch. The fabric is a lightweight, stretchy polyester, so it moves with you on a dancefloor. Small, Medium, Large, and X Large.
4. Women's First Mate Pirate Costume
The Women's First Mate Pirate Costume swaps the skirt for trousers: a tunic with an attached brown waistcoat, black and white striped trousers, and a red bandana, UK 8-10 to 20-22. This is the crew-not-captain look, and the one we'd pair with a men's captain (more below). The telescope is a photo prop.

5. Men's Rum Smuggler Pirate Costume
The Men's Rum Smuggler Pirate Costume is the full captain's set, and since late April it's been our best-selling adult fabric pirate costume by units, women's or men's. In the box: a jacket with an attached shirt and burgundy waistcoat, trousers, belts with pouch detail, boot covers, a scarf, a scabbard, and a tricorn hat. Seven pieces, with reinforced stitching. The sword and shoes in our photo aren't included; the boot covers go over your own footwear. It's sized by chest and height; with the shirt and waistcoat attached, chest and shoulders are what to measure.
Build a pirate look from your own wardrobe
Not every pirate needs a full costume. If you already own dark trousers, a skirt, or boots, one shirt does the rest of the work.
6. White Pirate Shirt
The White Pirate Shirt is a lace-up ruffle-front shirt with a matching belt, in a unisex cut, to wear over trousers or a skirt you already have. Five sizes run UK 8-10 to 24-26; between two, size up for a looser, more piratical fit. Add a hat (below) and you have a costume without buying a full outfit.

What do you need to finish a pirate costume?
Check what's already in the box before you buy extras. Here's what each costume above includes, and what you'd add on top.
- Already in the pack: the Rum Smuggler comes with its own hat and scabbard; the Deckhand comes with its own eye patch and bandana; the Buccaneer and Red & Black both come with their own hat.
- Add a hat on its own if you're building from the White Pirate Shirt.
- Add a sword, hook, eye patch, and earring together if you want the full finishing set rather than piece by piece.

7. Adult Pirate Costume Accessory Set
The Adult Pirate Costume Accessory Set bundles five pieces: a cutlass-style sword with a bronze-tone handle, a hook that slips over the hand, a black satin eye patch, a gold clip-on earring, and a set of plastic pirate keys. One size, ages 14 and up.
8. Women's Pirate Tricorn Hat with Feather
If you only need the hat, the Women's Pirate Tricorn Hat with Feather is a black tricorn with lace trim, a ribbon bow, and a feather accent. The brim is stitched into three points, so the shape holds through a long night of wear. One size, for a head circumference of about 56-58cm (22-23in).

The hat pop culture gave pirates
Draw a pirate captain and you'll probably give them a tricorn, but it wasn't standard pirate kit. The World History Encyclopedia says pirate captains "are not known to have worn tricorne hats, although it is possible that the more gentrified ones did". Royal Museums Greenwich dates the golden age of piracy to the 1680s through the 1720s. Sailors of that era wore collarless linen shirts and often loose breeches that could be tied at the knee, and a captain's long coat was typically taken from a wealthy captive or bought on shore, per the same encyclopedia. History Hit finds very little evidence for eye patches, and hooks were far rarer than popular culture suggests. We sell tricorns anyway, and happily: it's the shorthand that reads as "pirate" on sight, not a history lesson.
The word "buccaneer" has a separate history of its own: per Britannica, it comes from the French "boucan", a grill for smoking meat, and first described 17th-century Caribbean adventurers who raided Spanish shipping. Britannica still keeps them distinct from the outlawed pirates of the 18th century, so our Buccaneer costume gets its own name for a real reason.
Pirate costumes for couples and crews
Pair the Men's Rum Smuggler with the Women's First Mate for a captain-and-crew couple. The two don't need to match print for print; a captain and a crew member already read as a pair. Check two different charts, though: the Rum Smuggler goes by chest and height, the First Mate by UK dress size. Our best couples Halloween costumes guide covers a pirate captain-and-first-mate pairing alongside other themes; for a wider group, our best group Halloween costumes guide has more crew ideas to mix in.

9. Pirate Mermaid Pick Me Up Inflatable Costume
For a stag do, hen do, or a crew that wants one loud costume in the mix, the Pirate Mermaid Pick Me Up Inflatable Costume puts you in the mermaid's place, swept up in the arms of an inflatable pirate. A battery-powered fan and elasticated seals keep it inflated for around four hours on four AA batteries (not included), and hook-and-loop fastening makes it simple to get in and out of. One size, fits most adults.
Heading out for a stag or hen weekend specifically? Our best stag do fancy dress and best hen party fancy dress guides cover the rest of the lineup beyond pirates.
Sizing and care
Every costume here goes through over 30 measurement checks, one part of the more than 500,000 quality checks we run a year. Size by each product page's chart, not your usual letter: four pieces here go by UK dress size, the Deckhand by standard clothing sizes, and the Rum Smuggler by chest and height. The six fabric costumes here are 100% polyester; each takes a cold hand wash and an air dry, never the washing machine. The inflatable is different: remove the battery pack and fan unit first, then hand wash and air dry the same way.
When to wear a pirate costume beyond Halloween
Pirate costumes have a life outside October. International Talk Like a Pirate Day falls every 19 September; John Baur and Mark Summers started it in 1995 as a private joke, holding it themselves for seven years before a Dave Barry newspaper column in 2002 made it widely known. A pirate crew also suits a stag or hen weekend on mixed budgets: one person in the full Rum Smuggler captain's set, the rest in a White Pirate Shirt and a hat. If you're shopping for a child too, our best pirate costumes for kids guide covers the children's range so the whole family can match.
Frequently asked questions
At minimum, a striped or ruffled top, dark trousers or a skirt, and a hat. Our full fabric costumes put the outfit and a hat or bandana in one pack, and the Deckhand adds an eye patch; a build-your-own look just needs the shirt plus a separate hat and one prop, like the sword and eye patch in our accessory set.
Not as standard kit. The World History Encyclopedia states that pirate captains "are not known to have worn tricorne hats, although it is possible that the more gentrified ones did". The tricorn is the hat pop culture gave pirates, and it's why we still sell one; it just isn't a historically accurate default.
"Buccaneer" originally named a specific group of 17th-century Caribbean adventurers, from the French "boucan" for a meat-smoking grill, per Britannica. As a costume, our Buccaneer look is the coat-over-a-dress style: a black coat over a white dress with a frill hem, with a feathered hat.
Yes. Our White Pirate Shirt is designed to go over trousers or a skirt you already have, so you only need to add the shirt plus a hat and one prop to complete the look, rather than buying a full costume.
No. Every fabric pirate costume in this guide takes a cold hand wash and an air dry, never the washing machine. The inflatable needs its battery pack and fan unit removed first, then the same hand wash and air dry.
