The best funny wigs do one clear job: they make a character on their own, they are the whole joke, or they turn everyday clothes into a costume with one prop. About half of the orders on our UK website that included a wig sold on its own, between 3 November 2025 and 31 October 2026, had nothing else in the basket but the wig. Our full range of fancy dress wigs covers all three jobs.

Below, the wigs are sorted by job, after a short method for wearing one so it reads as hair, not a hat. Planning a decade night? Our best 80s fancy dress guide builds whole outfits around the hair.

How do you choose a funny wig that works?

Choose the job before the colour: a funny wig works when people can name the look from across the room. A hairstyle that belongs to one kind of person, a granny, a judge, a newsreader, does most of the costume for you. A wig that is the joke needs nothing else at all. A plain wig needs one prop to tell people who you are. That suits how people dress up: of UK adults planning to get a Halloween costume for themselves in 2026, 30% planned to make one and 29% to rewear one they already own (people could pick more than one option), in a YouGov survey from October 2026.

How do you make a fancy dress wig look less fake?

A fancy dress wig looks less fake when your own hair is flat underneath, the hairline sits where yours does, and the fibre has lost its factory shine. Seven steps, in order, starting the moment it comes out of the packet:

  1. Shake it out. A wig flattens in its bag, so shake it and finger-comb it from the ends before you put it on.
  2. Flatten your own hair. Plait long hair or pin it flat against your head, so the wig has no lumps to sit on.
  3. Add a wig cap. A thin liner keeps stray hairs in and helps stop the wig slipping.
  4. Line up the hairline. Pull the wig on from front to back and centre it on your forehead, so the front edge sits where your own hairline does.
  5. Pin it. Kirby grips at the sides and the nape stop it shifting when you dance; our Grey Granny Bun Wig & Glasses page recommends grips too.
  6. Comb gently. Work through the lengths with a wide-tooth comb. Never brush a wig while it is wet, says the Beatson Cancer Charity's wig care guide.
  7. Take the shine off. A light mist of dry shampoo, sprayed from a distance, can tone down the shine new synthetic fibre often has; on a dark wig, test a hidden patch first, as it can leave a pale cast.

Keep hot tools away from a costume wig. Cancer Research UK warns that hair dryers, straighteners and curling wands can melt synthetic wig fibres, and our Brown Wig & Tash page says the same: no heated styling tools on the polyester fibres. Style a costume wig cold, with your fingers and a few grips; only wigs sold as heat-resistant can take heat, and then only on a low setting.

Which wigs make the costume on their own?

Character wigs make the costume on their own because the hairstyle already belongs to someone: a granny, a newsreader, a judge, a hippie. Add one item of clothing and the look is finished.

Grey Granny Bun Wig and Glasses: a woman winking over round metal frame glasses, wearing a grey wig swept back into a low bun

Grey Granny Bun Wig & Glasses: a granny in one pack

The Grey Granny Bun Wig & Glasses comes as two pieces: a grey wig with the hair swept into a bun, and a pair of metal frame glasses. Add a cardigan and pearls from a charity shop and you are done. Prefer short curls to a bun? The Grey Granny Loose Curl Wig also comes with its own glasses. Both are 100% polyester.

News Anchor Wig & Tash: the newsreader

The News Anchor Wig & Tash pairs a short, dark brown wig with a matching thick moustache. Set the wig from its inner band first, then add the moustache. Put on a suit and tie and you are reading the news.

White Judge's Wig: a man in a black robe wearing a long white wig of tight tiered curls that falls to his chest

White Judge's Wig: court is in session

The White Judge's Wig is one long white wig of tiered curls that falls past the shoulders. It suits a judge, a barrister or a Georgian gent. Add a black gown and a toy gavel for a hen do court or a stag do sentencing.

Long Brown Hippie Wig with Sunglasses: three pieces, one decade

The Long Brown Hippie Wig with Sunglasses packs three pieces: a long, straight, centre-parted brown wig, a moustache and a pair of hippie glasses. Wear it with our Men's Psychedelic Hippie Suit, a campervan-print jacket with matching flares, for a 60s or 70s night. For a women's version, the Long Blonde Braided Hippie Wig adds thin braids through long blonde hair.

Which funny wigs are the whole joke?

Some funny wigs are the whole joke: the hairstyle is the punchline, a huge perm or a mullet. Wear one with your own clothes and people still get it.

Brown Wig & Tash: the big perm and the horseshoe

The Brown Wig & Tash is a full, curly brown wig plus a matching moustache. It covers your own hair completely, so it works over a short back and sides. With our Men's 80s Fitness Instructor Costume it turns into a full aerobics class.

Blonde Mullet Wig: business at the front

The Blonde Mullet Wig is short and feathered on top and long at the back, in frosted blonde. Centre it on your forehead so the short front sits where your hairline does. Our Adult Bright Blue 80s Tracksuit Costume finishes the look. Mullets lasted well into the next decade too; our best 90s fancy dress guide has more.

Which wig saves a last-minute costume?

A plain, clean-shaped wig saves a last-minute costume, because the prop you add decides who you are. The same black bob reads as a witch with a pointed hat or a secret agent with dark glasses.

Mid Length Straight Black Wig: a smiling woman in an off-the-shoulder black top wearing a glossy black bob wig

Mid Length Straight Black Wig: one wig, many characters

The Mid Length Straight Black Wig is a glossy, shoulder-length black bob in 100% polyester. Add a pointed hat or dark glasses to all-black clothes; nothing else needs to change.

Deluxe Pink Glitter Bob Wig: festival in a bag

The Deluxe Pink Glitter Bob Wig is a metallic pink bob that sits at jaw length, with a fringe. Add face gems and it is a festival or hen do look in two minutes. For a disco night, wear it with our Women's Silver Disco Jumpsuit Costume; our rock and pop star fancy dress guide has more stage looks.

Will a fancy dress wig fit, and how do you look after it?

Yes for most adults: every wig in this guide is one size, and adult head sizes vary less than you might think. In a large US Army body-measurement survey, ANSUR II, nine in ten men measured between 54.8 cm and 60.1 cm around the head, and nine in ten women between 53.2 cm and 59.7 cm. Soldiers are not a perfect match for the UK public, but the spread is only a few centimetres. With very thick or long hair, flatten it well first.

  • Washing: hand wash only and air dry; that is the care line on every wig page in this guide. Use cool water, and leave it overnight to dry fully.
  • Storing: keep it flat or on a wig stand, so a bun, a perm or a mullet keeps its shape.
  • Candles and fire pits: Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue advises keeping costumes, wigs and capes away from candles and heaters. Use battery tea lights for the pumpkin.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a fancy dress wig look less fake?

Flatten your own hair under a wig cap, line the wig's front edge up with your hairline, and pin it with kirby grips. Then brush the fibre gently and keep it away from heat. A thin wig cap underneath stops stray hairs showing.

What are the funniest wigs for a fancy dress party?

If you want the laugh without a costume, pick a wig that is the joke on its own: a big curly perm with a horseshoe moustache, or a blonde mullet. Our Brown Wig & Tash comes with the moustache in the pack.

What are good funny wigs for women?

A grey granny bun with glasses is a classic laugh, and a pink glitter bob suits a hen do or a festival. For a decade night, a long blonde braided hippie wig does the work with any maxi dress.

Can you straighten or curl a fancy dress wig?

Not with heat. Straighteners, curling tongs and hairdryers can melt standard costume wig fibre, so style it cold: shape curls with your fingers and hold a style in place with grips.

How do you wash a fancy dress wig?

Hand wash it in cool water with a little shampoo, rinse without wringing, then reshape it and let it air dry on a stand away from direct heat. Keep every wig in this guide out of the washing machine.

Do you need to buy a costume with a fancy dress wig?

No. About half of the UK orders on our website that included a wig sold on its own, between 3 November 2025 and 31 October 2026, had no costume in the basket. A character wig plus one prop is a costume.
