Three of our kids' clown costumes sit at different scare levels: a rainbow clown dress with the face left open, a full-body Morphsuit with a hood, and a horror set with a hand-painted mask, in sizes from age 3 to age 14. None has face paint in the pack. Pick the one that matches how much fright your child actually wants.

Which kids' clown costume suits which scare level?
The rainbow dress keeps your child's face on show under a rainbow striped hat, the Morphsuit puts a clown on the whole child, and the horror set is the full scare with a mask. All three sit in our kids' Halloween costumes range, and the table sorts this clown fancy dress by look, face, pack, and size.
| Costume | The look | Face | In the pack | Sizes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Girls Rainbow Creepy Clown Costume | Layered dress with puff sleeves and rose satin buttons, rainbow striped headband and hat | Open | Dress, rainbow striped headband with attached hat | 3-4 years, then S (4-6yrs) to XL (12-14yrs) |
| Kids Clown Morphsuit | Head-to-toe creepy clown style | Covered by the hood | Morphsuit only | S (4-6yrs) to L (10-12yrs), by height |
| Boys Horror Clown Costume | Red, grey, and black spots and stripes, ruffle collar, red wig | Hand-painted mask | Top, trousers, mask with red wig and top hat | S (4-6yrs) to XL (12-14yrs) |
These three lean spooky, with "creepy" or "horror" in two of the names. If your child wants a gentler Halloween outfit than a clown, our guide to the best pumpkin costumes for kids runs from cute to creepy, and the wider best kids' Halloween costumes guide covers more of the range.
Between 23 April and 10 October 2026, 73% of the kids' clown costume orders on morphsuits.co.uk included one of our two girls' clown designs, the rainbow dress here or our Girls Creepy Clown Costume.
Three of our kids' clown costumes
We took each pack list and size below from the product page, not the photo, and where a photo shows make-up or a prop that the pack does not hold, we say so.

Girls Rainbow Creepy Clown Costume: colour first, creepy second
A layered dress with puff sleeves and rose satin button detail, finished with a rainbow striped headband that has a hat attached. The girls rainbow creepy clown costume is 100% polyester with stretchy fabric and an elasticated waist, and it is the only one of the three with a toddler size, 3-4 years, ahead of four more sizes, S (4-6yrs) up to XL (12-14yrs). The make-up, ripped tights, boots, and balloons in the photo are not in the pack.
The dress takes a hand wash in cool water and an air dry laid flat, which helps the layered skirt keep its shape.
Kids Clown Morphsuit: the whole clown in one print
A Morphsuit covers your child from head to toe in creepy clown style, so the head is covered as well and the make-up question never comes up. Cut from 91% polyester and 9% elastane, the kids clown Morphsuit has four-way stretch and cover-stitched inner seams, and it is sized by height in three sizes, from S (4-6yrs) up to L (10-12yrs). The pack is the Morphsuit only, and it comes off as easily as it goes on. The fabric is designed to be breathable and see-through from the inside, so your child can see and breathe comfortably in it.
Care is a hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent and an air dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight. If your child has never worn a Morphsuit, we would try the hood on at home first, so the first time is not on the doorstep.

Boys Horror Clown Costume: the full scare, mask included
A distressed red, grey, and black spotted and striped top and trousers, a blood-stained ruffle collar, and a hand-painted creepy clown mask with a red wig and top hat. The boys horror clown costume is 100% polyester, loose-fitting with an elastic waistband, in four sizes from S (4-6yrs) up to XL (12-14yrs). The pack is the top, the trousers, and the mask; the baseball bat in the photo is a prop.
Hand wash the top and trousers separately from the mask, air dry everything flat away from heat, and store the mask carefully so the hand-painted finish lasts into next year.
What should you check before you order?
Five things are worth settling before a clown costume goes in the basket: how scary the look is for your child, which size to order, whether you need face paint, where the costume is going, and what the label says.
Check 1: is a clown costume too scary for a young child?
Let your child choose the scare level: some children ask for the scariest clown going, and some find any clown a step too far. Reuters reported in January 2008 that University of Sheffield researchers, studying ward decor, asked 250 hospital patients aged 4 to 16 and found that all of them disliked clowns in it, and that even the older children found clowns scary. That was clown images in ward decor, not costumes, and the children were unwell, so it is a reminder rather than a rule.
Kathryn Keough, a psychologist at the Child Mind Institute, advises parents to follow a child's lead, and the Institute's article notes that young children may have a hard time telling imaginary monsters from reality. Three habits help:
- Put the three product photos side by side and let your child point. A child who goes quiet at the horror mask has given you the answer.
- Start with the rainbow dress if clowns are new to them, because it has no mask and leaves the face open.
- Younger trick-or-treaters on your route meet the horror mask first, so lifting it to say hello lets them see who is inside.
Check 2: which size should you order?
The rainbow dress is sized by age and the horror set by age and height, and both product pages tell you to size up if your child is between sizes. On the selector, S is 4-6 years, M is 7-9, L is 10-12, and XL is 12-14, with a 3-4 year size on the rainbow dress only. The Morphsuit is sized by height, so measure your child before you pick S, M, or L.
Check 3: do you need face paint?
You do not need face paint for any of the three, and none of the packs includes any. The Morphsuit covers the head as well, the horror set brings its own mask, and the make-up on the rainbow dress model is not part of the pack. If you add face paint of your own, the American Academy of Pediatrics' advice is to test a small amount a few days before it goes on your child's face, and to remove it at the end of the day.

Check 4: school disco or Halloween night?
Face cover is the difference here: the rainbow dress shows your child's face, while the Morphsuit hood and the horror mask hide it. Check your school's rule on full-face masks and scary costumes before a class party. If the disco rules out masks, the rainbow dress is the one without a mask, and the horror set can wait for Halloween night.
Check 5: what should the label say?
On any children's costume, the packaging should carry a UKCA or CE mark and the name and address of the UK manufacturer or importer. Children's fancy dress is classed as a toy rather than clothing, and the London Fire Brigade's fancy dress guidance says a missing mark may mean the costume does not meet legal safety requirements, while a missing name and address leaves you no one to follow up with.
All of our kids' products are safety tested by accredited labs. Every costume goes through over 30 measurement checks.
All three take a cold hand wash and an air dry. Keep the washing machine for the school uniform.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on the child, so let them choose the scare level. Clowns are not a universal favourite: Reuters reported in 2008 that all 250 hospital patients aged 4 to 16 asked in a University of Sheffield study disliked clowns in ward decor. Start with the rainbow dress, which has no mask and leaves the face open, and keep the horror set for a child who asked for it.
The girls rainbow creepy clown costume is the one built around rainbow colour, with a rainbow striped headband and an attached hat in the pack. For a sweeter Halloween look, the pumpkin costumes guide above runs from cute to creepy.
The girls rainbow creepy clown costume starts at 3-4 years, which is the smallest size of these three. The Morphsuit and the horror set start at S (4-6yrs), so none of the three has a size below 3-4 years.
None of these three packs includes face paint. The Morphsuit covers your child from head to toe, and the horror set comes with a hand-painted mask, so neither needs any.
The XL (12-14yrs) on the rainbow dress and the horror set is the size for a 12 to 14 year old. The Morphsuit stops at L (10-12yrs), so it is the one to pick for a younger child.
Each of these three kids' clown costumes takes a cold hand wash and an air dry, with no trip through the washing machine. On the horror set, wash the mask apart from the top and trousers, and store it carefully to keep its hand-painted finish.
